"summary_en": "To prevent further global warning, we have to reduce our use of fossil fuels. For the future, this means we have to synthesize our chemicals and fuels sustainably from carbon dioxide. Currently, biofuels can be produced from plant material, but this process competes with food production and suffers from low efficiencies. Here, a new approach is developed, in which CO2-fixing bacteria are coupled to nanoparticle ‘solar panels’. This project aims to understand and enhance the transfer of light energy, harvested by the nanoparticles, to CO2-fixing bacteria, where the energy is used to synthesize valuable chemicals from CO2.",

"update_en": "To enable this challenging approach, we aimed to introduce electron-transferring proteins into CO2-fixing bacteria. We successfully generated genetic constructs for this purpose. But we could not prove so far that the electron-transferring proteins are correctly produced in our engineered bacterial strains. Therefore, further work must focus on the characterization of key metabolic pathways in the CO2-fixing bacteria so that the electron-transferring proteins can be produced as intended. Over the course of this work, new genetic elements (specifically promoters) were identified and characterized. These will be used in future projects that focus on the genetic engineering of CO2-fixing bacteria.",
