"summary_nl": "This project is a collaboration between a mathematical physicist specializing in quantum theory and a logician specializing in algorithmic randomness. The aim is to clarify the nature of both the logical and the probabilistic structure of quantum mechanics, in combination with each other. This will be done through two PhD projects: \n\n 1. Mathematical randomness properties of quantum theory; \n\n 2. Semantics for intuitionistic quantum logic. \n\nThe first PhD student will investigate the specific randomness properties of measurement outcomes in quantum mechanics, especially infinite series of quantum coin flips. This will have important repercussions for the security and certification of quantum random number generators of the kind used in cryptography as well as for the issue of possible hidden variables underneath quantum mechanics, and hence for determinism. The second subproject is based on the discovery (around 2010) by the main applicant and his collaborators of a specific class of Heyting algebras functorially associated to matrix algebras and more generally to C*-algebras. This formalized earlier speculations that the logic of quantum mechanics should be intuitionistic, but the semantics of these new intuitionistic quantum logics is quite unknown. As the PhD research develops, the two supervisors and their students will also try to relate these two parts to each other, for example through choice sequences in intuitionistic mathematics, whose relationship to random sequences and quantum theory needs to be explored.",
