"summary_nl": "At very low temperatures, atoms and molecules behave very differently than at higher temperatures. At temperatures below ~ 10 Kelvin, the laws of quantum mechanics start governing interactions between atoms and molecules, resulting in bizarre phenomena that have often been predicted theoretically decades ago, but that have been elusive to experimental observation. In this project, we will develop the methods to cool chemically relevant molecules such as NO and ND3 to temperatures as low as 1 mK, and study collisions involving these molecules. This will reveal the appearance of scattering resonances at temperatures below 10 K, and probe the onset of the utracold Wigner regime at temperatures below 100 mK. Using laser-based detection methods, we will be able to image the collision event, yielding unprecedented accurate views on molecular collision processes at the most fundamental quantum mechanical level. This project will directly visualize how molecular collisions transform from “hot” into “ultracold”, thereby opening up a new research direction in the field of ultracold molecules, with potential applications in chemical physics, astrochemistry, and quantum computation schemes.",
