"summary_nl": "Recent years have seen tremendous progress in the field of topological superconductivity, with intense efforts on using semiconductor-superconductor hybrids to create localized Majorana zero modes, potential building blocks for a topological quantum computer. However, realizing Majoranas in one-dimensional systems is challenging since the topological phase is easily destroyed by local variations in the potential landscape. The goal of the research outlined in this proposal is to exploit the flexibility of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) to create self-tuned topological states that do not require fine tuning of microscopic parameters, and are immune to large changes in the chemical potential and disorder. Two distinct strategies will be employed to realize these new topological states. The first approach uses Josephson junctions, where a Zeeman field can switch the ground state of the system from a 0-state to a π-state, and this 0-π transition is accompanied by a first order topological phase transition. The second approach harnesses the quantum Hall effect, whereby crossed Andreev reflections between counter-propagating spin-polarized edge channels will be used to open up a topological gap in the lowest Landau level. Using complementary experimental methods (local/non-local transport and the AC/DC Josephson effect) we will firmly establish the emergence of a truly global topological phase. Not only will these results establish new routes towards engineering Majoranas, but doing so on a two-dimensional platform will open up the possibility to use them for scalable qubit architectures in the future.",
