"summary_nl": "What happens at the beginning of the universe and what happens inside a black hole? To answer these questions we need to combine quantum mechanics and Einstein's theory of gravity, and string theory provides a promising framework to do so. Black holes in string theory not only serve as a testing ground for a tentative theory of quantum gravity, but surprisingly also provide us with insights into quantum cosmology, a field in urgent need for development, especially in view of the influx of observational astronomical data expected in the near future.\n\nIn this project we will focus on a particular model, describing stable arrangements of multiple black holes in string theory, that is rich enough to capture much of the physics and yet simple enough to allow quantitative control. \n\nWe will proceed in three steps. Firstly we address the question of which multi-hole arrangements can occur and how to classify the different possibilities. Secondly, using these results we will analyze the possibilities of the analogous systems in quantum cosmology. Finally, by relating these systems to equivalent but simpler ones using known equivalences in string theory, we hope to obtain a clearer interpretation of them.",
