"summary_nl": "The project explores robust and scalable methods for transferring quantum states between optical pulses and spins in solid state. The proposal objectives address the fundamental process of spins strongly interacting with a highly confined optical field resulting in quantum mechanical spin-photon correlations. My approach is to embed spin ensembles in micron-scale optical waveguides processed on a semiconductor. The context of the research is in quantum memories wherein the control of an ensemble of spins can profoundly impact the propagation of an optical pulse in the memory.\n\nThe project builds on the established idea that electron spins in a semiconductor can be manipulated using quantum optical control techniques, which were mainly pioneered with ensembles of alkali atoms. The control of the interaction of spins and a few-photon pulse enables the group velocity of the pulse to be strongly reduced, thereby effectively storing the pulse in the memory. Thus, I will exploit waveguides on a semiconductor chip in studies of quantum correlations between emitted optical pulses and optical memory functions in a medium with a spin ensemble.\n\nThe proposed work pioneers two innovations. The first is to use ensembles of spins in a silicon carbide semiconductor rather than the more commonly studied case of an individual spin in a quantum dot or NV-center in diamond. A waveguide-based ensemble gives access to robust interactions between spins and highly directional optical fields without using optical cavities. The second innovation is to apply projective measurements with standard quantum optical tools for preparing non-classical correlations between quantum states of spins and optical pulses. Thus, by developing new technical capabilities to study the unexplored and fundamental physics of light propagation in an innovative ?waveguide quantum memory?, this work advances efforts to realize truly scalable quantum technology. \n",
