What we still lack is a detailed and quantitative description of the highly curved and quantum-fluctuating geometry of spacetime at this so-called Planck scale. \n \nInvestigators all over the world are hotly pursuing such a theory of quantum gravity. The aim of the proposed research is to spearhead the search for ?quantum spacetime? by building on a key new insight into its geometrical microstructure, namely, that causality at the Planck scale may be responsible for the fact that our world is four-dimensional.
