      "summary_nl": "The aim of the proposed research is to develop \"opto-magnetism\" as a new-line of research at the junction of coherent nonlinear optics and magnetism. In particular, I am aiming to investigate nonthermal effects of light on magnetic order and to obtain highly efficient ultrafast (10^{-12} seconds and faster) optical control of magnetism.\n\nUltrafast lasers are now so effective that they can steer chemical reactions, control the energy flow in biological objects, manipulate (quasi)particles and trigger different kinds of phase transitions, all on a femtosecond time scale. Efficient, ultrafast and nonthermal laser control of magnetism remains a challenge. Such technique may open new prospect of opto-magnetic recording as one solution to the need for ever increasing speed of data storage and manipulation. \n\nUltrafast laser control of magnetism raises many fundamental questions concerning the mechanisms that are responsible for the nonthermal effect of photons on spins and ultrafast laser induced changes of magnetic order. In this proposal I am planning to address these fundamental questions of femtosecond opto-magnetism using novel experimental approaches for both the excitation and observation of magnetism on an ultrafast timescale. In particular, the proposal involves: a) the development of coherent quantum control of spins, where specially shaped laser pulses steer the spins into a desired state due to the effects of quantum interference; b) exploring the ultrafast response of magnetic order with advanced optical and X-ray techniques.\n\nThe proposed research may lead to many exciting applications in information storage, data manipulation and telecommunication, such as ultrafast laser-induced switching of spins, spins lasers and phase-locked THz generators.    \n",
