"summary_nl": "I propose to theoretically investigate the coherent quantum dynamics in nanoscale conductors that are subjected to local time-dependent electric and magnetic fields. The nanoconductors referred to are characterized by two properties: the first one is that one can identify individual quantum states of the system, as is the case for e.g. an electron confined to a quantum dot or a magnetic atom embedded in a semiconducting wire. The second characteristic property is that the total number of available quantum states is quite large, i.e. more than just one or two, for example because the conductor is composed of different parts or because it has a large discrete energy level spectrum. When a nanoconductor with these two properties is coherently manipulated by time-dependent fields, which dynamically couple individual quantum states, the resulting quantum dynamics will generally be quite complex.\n\nMany real, interesting and different nanosystems, such as gated quantum dot structures, doped nanowires and molecular nanojunctions, belong to this category of nanoconductors. A theoretical description of their quantum dynamics under the action of time-dependent electric or magnetic fields does not exist. Investigating this dynamics is interesting, because it may lead to the discovery of new dynamical effects and teach us about ways in which we can coherently control quantum dynamics in these systems. The latter is directly related to current prominent questions concerning specific nanosystems, e.g. how to control the time evolution of entangled quantum states in quantum dot structures.\n\nI propose to develop a general phenomenological description, based on a density matrix approach, of the quantum dynamics in nanoconductors that are coherently manipulated by time-dependent electric and magnetic fields, and use this to investigate the fundamental characteristics of quantum dynamics in systems with a given degree of dynamical complexity. This model will then be applied to various specific nanosystems.\n",
