"summary_nl": "Quantum computation holds the promise of solving problems that are unsolvable with classical methods. However, the construction of a quantum computer is extremely demanding and requires thousands of interacting qubits with exquisite control. Silicon can come to the rescue and serve as an ideal platform technology for qubit operation. I have recently demonstrated single-qubit and two-qubit gates with silicon quantum dot qubits. This opens prospects for scalability, as these silicon qubits can be constructed with proven technology capable of producing billions of conventional transistors on a single chip. \n\nMy goal is to push the qubit performance beyond thresholds necessary for quantum computation and to increase the number of qubits such that large arrays come in sight. A major engineering challenge and paradigm shift, is to raise the operating temperature of high-performance quantum dot qubits to four Kelvin, where cooling power is sufficient to cope with the heat dissipation of larger qubit circuits.\n\nTo reach this goal, I will focus on the following key steps. First, my team will diminish quantum errors due to electrical noise such that the qubit performance drastically improves. I propose a novel industry-compatible method for quantum dot fabrication, which will reduce the noise while the sensitivity to noise will be reduced by eliminating spin-orbit coupling. Second, we will isolate the spin states that define the qubits from other degrees of freedom, such that we can increase the operation temperature. Third, we will transport spin states between quantum dots, resulting in benchmarks for spin relaxation-lengths in the solid state and the demonstration of long-range qubit coupling. \n\nThese steps enable us to perform quantum error-correction on a qubit array, providing the path to engineer a logical qubit and taking us into an era where arbitrarily long quantum computations can be performed.\n",
