"summary_nl": "Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) allow one to combine solar light conversion with architectural demands. Semiconductor quantum dots are very promising as the active material for spectral conversion and redirection of the light into guided optical modes of the concentrator. Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have a tunable absorption and emission spectrum and are photochemically stable in a variety of matrix materials. However, the QDs mostly proposed for luminescent downconversion are CdSe-based. Moreover, even after impressive nanocrystal engineering there is still a considerable fraction of the redirected light that is lost by reabsorption over a length in the 10 cm range whereas full scalability would require distances 10 times longer. Here, we propose LSCs based on Cd-free QDs with reabsorption/emission losses reduced to an absolute minimum and enhanced re-emission in the guided modes of the concentrator. The former is achieved by doping QDs in such a way that the down-conversion and re-emission of the absorbed solar light involves dopant-related transitions that are not countered by self-absorption. Enhanced coupling of the emitted light to guided modes on the other hand is affected by forming optically anisotropic structures, either involving the macroscopic alignment of rod-shaped emitters or the embedding of QDs in high refractive index thin films. Moreover, various pathways towards a scalable implementation of QD-LSCs will be explored in close collaboration with industrial partners, with a focus on low-cost laminated structures where the QDs are embedded in thin film coatings and sheets. Finally, realistic outdoor testing is envisaged based to map the full application range of QD-LSCs and pave the way for edifice-integrated solar light conversion. ",
