"summary_nl": "The aim of this project is to develop Fluidized Bed Atomic Layer Deposition (FB-ALD) technology for coating semiconducting quantum dots (Q-dots) with ultra-thin functional coatings. FB-ALD is a novel nano-manufacturing technique in which a fluidized bed is created via a gas flow through a bed of (dry) nanoparticles. By pulsed dosing of precursor chemicals in the gas flow, thin coatings can be deposited in a controlled, layer-by-layer manner, and uniform coating of the Q-dots can be achieved. The resulting core-shell quantum dots form the building blocks for next generation opto-electronic devices, such as photovoltaic solar cells and photo-catalysts. As a result of quantum confinement effects in the core, strong modification of the optical and electronic characteristics can occur. One example is the generation of multiple electron-hole pairs upon absorption of a single photon, so-called impact ionisation. Enormous efficiency enhancements can be achieved due to these effects, forming the basis for 3rd generation photovoltaic solar cells with theoretical efficiencies of up to 66%. The function of the surrounding ultra-thin shell is to offer chemical protection for the Q-dot and to enable fast and efficient extraction of the charge carriers. The structure of the core-shell interface and the extent of carrier multiplication and similar effects will be studied with high-resolution electron microscopy and spectroscopic techniques, respectively. Active participation of our industrial partners in the design and construction of the FB-ALD reactor and with analysis of the synthesized materials ensures efficient knowledge transfer and utilisation. The FB-ALD technology that we propose to develop may become a key enabler for large-scale manufacturing of core-shell nanosystems, and aims to bridge the gap between fundamental research and device development. As such, it potentially gives Dutch companies a head start and may help them to secure and maintain leading positions in the highly competitive international field of opto-electronic devices based on semiconductor nanocrystals, such as 3rd generation PV cells.",
