"summary_nl": "Quantum computers will enable powerful and fundamentally new ways for processing information that have the potential to revolutionize various scientific disciplines such as physics, material science, chemistry, and biology. However, a major challenge for building such quantum machines is that the quantum states used to encode and process the information are fragile and errors inevitably occur. Without a way to overcome these errors, large-scale quantum computing is impossible. The key idea to overcome errors is to encode quantum states in multiple entangled qubits forming an error-corrected logical qubit. I propose to use programmable Rydberg atom arrays to realize fault-tolerant topologically protected logical qubits. This outstanding goal is now within reach due to recent advances in the host group that demonstrated a quantum spin liquid phase of the toric code using an array of 219 Rydberg atoms. To achieve this goal, I will first extend the capabilities of the experimental system with major advances over the state-of-the-art to enable high-fidelity individual control and fast state detection of the qubits. The results of this work would provide experimental insights into the possibilities and limits of fault-tolerance in real physical systems, and would create a new pathway towards large-scale quantum computing.",
