"summary_nl": "Quantum computing could potentially solve problems – e.g. developing new drugs – that are out of reach of classical computers. One challenge in their development lies in scaling up the number of quantum bits (qubits) they can simultaneously process. When encoding these qubits into the state of trapped ions, this notably manifests in the large number of lasers and optical components required per qubit. Here, I propose to build a more scalable ion trapping platform by combining two techniques, microwave-driven logic and integrated optics onto a single ion trapping chip. Both techniques have been demonstrated separately, but only when used together do they have the potential to eliminate the roadblocks the research field is facing. Amongst others, removing the need for arrays of lasers, or gaining optical access to an ion trapped in the centre of a grid of ions. By designing, fabricating and benchmarking the performance of an ion trapping chip incorporating these two techniques, the final product will be a detailed exploration of a potentially scalable building block for quantum computing. The results may define a new standard approach to increasing the number of trapped ion qubits: one more step towards the construction of a fully-fledged quantum computer.",

In this project, we developped new techniques to control ion traps with cheap and stable scalable electronics, rather than expensive and unreliable lasers, making this quantum computing platform more scalable.",
